Stores Online Day 77: My First Order!
November 23rd 2007 10:54 am
I was getting all set to write a post that I’m still waiting for my first order, but then…I got one! Whoo Hoo Peru!
Not bad considering I’ve been really delinquent about getting incoming links. One thing I did do, however, is write and submit an article on baby slings.
Unfortunately, I can’t find a way to put Google Analytics on my store so I can tell where my sales are coming from. My "total access to the html" that they promised me means that I can put Javascript in the body tag, but I can’t can’t determine where it will go. It automatically puts it at the top of the body tag, and Google tells you to put their code right before the end body tag.
Someone from the forum suggested that I add a text element, put the code there, and move it to the bottom of my page. Unfortunately when I try to do that, I get "error on page" and it won’t let me save it.
Also, when you set up Google Analytics specifically for an ecommerce site so that it will analyze return on investment, etc., you have to add a call to a javascript function in the body tag itself,
body onLoad=”javascript:_utmSetTrans()”
But there’s definitely no way to add something to the body tag itself.
Sigh…
We’ll I’m still psyched about my first order. I’ll have to make a real effort to get incoming links and see what happens.

I’m not sure if you figured it out already but I just wanted you to know that you can put your storesonline site on Google Analytics. I have a StoresOnlinePro website (don’t know if it’s the same as yours) and I use Google Analytics. It’s great!
Basically, what you have to do is go into the Advanced section of the Home page (in the Pages section) and add the google script to the Head and Body sections as requested by google. The script goes something like this:
There’s more to it but if you have StoresOnlinePro, it can be done.
If that doesn’t work for you, you can also use FTP to upload a basic HTML page with the code google wants. I’ve tried both and they worked. Look in the help files and search for http://FTP. It’s recommend a program Filezilla. It’s pretty easy.
Hope this helps.

Hi Fil,
That’s true; I did get my “error on page” to disappear when I tried it again. You’re right; you can put the code in the body section of advanced.
However, one problem with this is whatever you put into the body box of the advanced section automatically gets put at the top of the body section in your html. The instructions for Google Analytics tell you to put the code at the bottom of the body section. I got around this by putting the code into a text element instead of using the advanced function. Then I moved the text element as far down on the page in layout mode as I could. It still wasn’t totally at the bottom of the body section, but it was closer.
The other problem is that there are 2 different instructions for setting up Google Analytics. If you just set up the vanilla version, you’re right, all you need to do is add the script to the page. However, if you want to set it up for eCommerce, the Google Analytics instructions tell you to put something in the body tag,
body onLoad=”javascript:_utmSetTrans()”
With Storesonline, there’s no way to modify the body tag this way other than to pay their programmers to do it.
But if you just want the basic version of Google Analytics, you’re right, it can be set up.
